Before having a root canal completed by Complete Smiles Dental, it can be beneficial to understand more about it. A root canal is needed when the tooth becomes infected. A tooth can become infected due to decay that will eat away at a tooth. If this is left untreated, it will allow bacteria down into the bottom, or pulp, of your tooth. Bacteria that are left within your tooth will eventually end up in an infection. A root canal can be completed within the dental office in order to remove the infection within your tooth.
Your family dentist will begin this procedure by numbing the affected area with a local anesthesia. This will help assure your comfort throughout the procedure. A hole is then made into the tooth in order to remove any pulp that may remain and to ensure that the root is prepared. A compound is then inserted to kill any pulp and bacteria that remain. The canal is then dried out and filled with a substance that will seal it off so bacteria cannot get into it. The remaining portion of the tooth is then filled.
This procedure is more common in adults and is not a procedure that is as often completed by a pediatric dentist. As children begin to grow and their adult teeth come in, if a cavity appears that is not fixed, it could result in needing a root canal. A children’s dentist could then complete this procedure as necessary.
When someone is in need of a root canal, there can be some pain and discomfort. In some cases, the pain can be severe enough to need to see an emergency dentist. They are equipped as well to complete this procedure when it is needed.
